Florida summers are brutal — not just on people, but on vehicles. The combination of extreme heat, humidity, afternoon downpours, and stop-and-go traffic puts enormous stress on every system in your car. A little preparation goes a long way toward avoiding a breakdown in the July heat.
Air Conditioning
This is the obvious one. If your AC is blowing lukewarm air or takes a long time to cool down, get it checked now — before every AC shop in town is booked solid.
Common issues include low refrigerant, a failing compressor, or a clogged cabin air filter. A professional AC check takes about 30 minutes and can save you from a miserable (and potentially dangerous) summer drive.
Cooling System
Your engine cooling system works overtime in Florida. Make sure:
- Coolant level is full and the mixture is correct (usually 50/50 coolant to water)
- Hoses are firm and not cracked — rubber deteriorates faster in heat
- The radiator fan is working — if it doesn't kick on when the engine is warm, you'll overheat in traffic
- No visible leaks under the car after it's been parked
An overheated engine in 95-degree Florida traffic can quickly become a catastrophic failure.
Battery
Heat kills batteries faster than cold does. Florida's heat accelerates the chemical reactions inside your battery, causing it to degrade faster. Most batteries last 3-4 years in Florida, compared to 4-5 years in moderate climates.
If your battery is more than 3 years old, have it tested. A weak battery might start your car fine in the morning but fail after sitting in a hot parking lot all afternoon.
Tires
Hot pavement is hard on tires. Check:
- Tire pressure — heat causes air to expand, so check pressure when tires are cool (morning). Under-inflated tires on hot pavement are a blowout risk.
- Tread depth — Florida afternoon rain on bald tires is a recipe for hydroplaning
- Sidewall condition — look for cracks, bulges, or dry rot
Wipers and Washer Fluid
Florida's daily summer thunderstorms demand working wipers. If your wipers streak, chatter, or leave missed areas, replace them. They're inexpensive and take 5 minutes to install.
Top off your washer fluid too — you'll need it for the bug splatter and road spray.
Belts and Hoses
Heat accelerates the deterioration of rubber belts and hoses. A broken serpentine belt will disable your power steering, AC, and alternator all at once. A burst radiator hose will leave you stranded with an overheating engine.
Visual inspection takes 2 minutes and can prevent a roadside emergency.
