Dashboard Warning Lights
That light on your dashboard is trying to tell you something. Here's what each one means and what you should do about it.
What Do the Colors Mean?
Red Lights — Immediate Attention Required
Oil Pressure
Do not driveEngine oil pressure has dropped dangerously low. Without proper lubrication, your engine's internal components will grind against each other, potentially causing catastrophic and irreversible damage within minutes.
What to do: Pull over safely and turn off the engine immediately. Do not attempt to drive. Check your oil level if safe to do so, then call us.
Temperature / Overheating
Do not driveYour engine coolant temperature is critically high. Continued driving risks warped cylinder heads, a blown head gasket, or complete engine seizure. Florida heat makes this especially dangerous.
What to do: Pull over immediately, turn off the engine, and wait for it to cool. Never open the radiator cap while hot. Call us for help.
Brake System
Do not driveYour brake system has a critical fault. This could mean brake fluid is dangerously low, the hydraulic system has lost pressure, or the parking brake is engaged. Your ability to stop safely may be compromised.
What to do: Test your brakes gently. If they feel soft or unresponsive, pull over immediately and call us. Do not continue driving.
Battery / Charging
Drive to shop onlyYour charging system has failed — the alternator is no longer keeping the battery charged. Your car is running on stored battery power only, which will run out. Electrical systems will begin failing.
What to do: Turn off non-essential electronics (AC, radio, heated seats) and drive directly to the shop. Do not turn the engine off until you arrive — it may not restart.
Transmission Temperature
Do not driveTransmission fluid temperature is critically high. Overheated transmission fluid loses its lubricating properties, which can permanently damage gears, clutch packs, and internal seals.
What to do: Pull over, shift to Park, and let the vehicle idle with AC off for several minutes. If the light stays on, do not continue driving. Call us.
Yellow / Amber Lights — Schedule Service
Check Engine
OK to drive, schedule soonThe most common dashboard light — and the most misunderstood. It could be something as simple as a loose gas cap or as serious as a catalytic converter failure. The only way to know is a diagnostic scan.
What to do: If the light is steady, schedule a diagnostic soon. If it's flashing, that indicates an engine misfire — reduce speed and come in immediately.
ABS (Anti-Lock Brakes)
OK to drive, schedule soonYour anti-lock braking system has a fault. Your regular brakes still work normally, but the ABS safety feature that prevents wheel lockup during hard braking is disabled.
What to do: Your brakes still function, but avoid sudden stops if possible. Schedule service soon — ABS is a critical safety system, especially in Florida rain.
Tire Pressure (TPMS)
OK to drive, schedule soonOne or more tires is at least 25% below the recommended pressure. Under-inflated tires reduce fuel economy, wear unevenly, handle poorly, and are more prone to blowouts — especially on hot Florida pavement.
What to do: Check all four tires (plus the spare) at your nearest gas station. If a tire keeps losing pressure, you likely have a slow leak. Come see us.
Airbag / SRS
OK to drive, schedule soonThe supplemental restraint system has detected a fault. This means your airbags may not deploy in a crash, or in rare cases, could deploy unexpectedly. Seat belt pretensioners may also be affected.
What to do: Your car is safe to drive, but this is a serious safety concern. Schedule a diagnostic — we can read the SRS codes and identify the issue.
Traction / Stability Control
OK to drive, schedule soonIf this light flashes while driving, that's normal — it means the system is actively preventing wheel spin on a slippery surface. If it stays on solid, the system has been disabled or has a fault.
What to do: Flashing is normal in rain or on gravel. If it stays on solid, schedule a check. A faulty wheel speed sensor is the most common cause.
Power Steering
OK to drive, schedule soonYour power steering assist has failed or is reduced. The steering wheel will feel much heavier than normal, especially at low speeds and when parking. The car is still steerable but requires more effort.
What to do: You can still drive, but use extra caution. Avoid tight parking situations. Schedule service — this is often an electrical issue on modern cars.
Emissions / Catalytic Converter
OK to drive, schedule soonYour vehicle's emissions system isn't working properly. This is often related to the catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, or evaporative emissions system. Fuel economy will likely suffer.
What to do: Schedule a diagnostic. Ignoring this can lead to more expensive repairs and may cause you to fail an emissions inspection.
Fuel Level Low
OK to drive, schedule soonYour fuel tank is running low — typically meaning you have 1-3 gallons remaining, depending on the vehicle. Most cars can drive 30-50 miles after this light comes on, but don't push it.
What to do: Find a gas station soon. Running completely out of fuel can damage your fuel pump and leave you stranded.
Maintenance Required
OK to drive, schedule soonThis is a mileage-based reminder — not an error code. It means you've reached a maintenance interval (usually an oil change). It doesn't mean anything is broken, just that service is due.
What to do: Schedule an oil change or maintenance appointment. We'll reset the light after service.
